The Salvation Army was founded in London, England, in 1865 by William Booth. It is now an international organization with divisions in 100 countries throughout the world. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Each year the Salvation Army Service Unit is looking for students, faculty members and school employees to help ring bells at a local supermarket or department store. The funds that are raised are used by your local Salvation Army Service Unit to assist individuals or families in your town with emergency assistance. Ringing bells can be a special project for school groups such as the National Honor Society or perhaps a school sports team. Bell ringing is a great way to give something back to your community and help those that are less fortunate. The Red Kettle campaign usually begins the weekend before Thanksgiving and runs until Christmas Eve. School groups usually have 8 or more volunteers who give a couple of hours per week of their time. A typical school bell-ringing schedule is 4pm to 8pm Thursday and Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.
